However, one site stated that it is Intel-64, which was defined as the processor being capable of 64-bit operation with the appropriate software. Intel E5300 Cpu Windows 7 On AKind of sounds like its a 64-bit processor that would run a 64-bit operating system, but it seems kind of strange that Acer would load a 32-bit version of Windows 7 on a machine that is capable of 64-bit operation. If this processor is truly capable of 64-bit operation, might there be any dependencies in the motherboard like bus width or other hardware constraints that could limit the computer to 32-bit operation. Ive come across many of these and every time I just reinstall Windows 7 Pro 64bit regardless of RAM amount. I think the 32bit license must have been cheaper and on lower powered machines no one cared. The fact that there are price differentials between the 32-bit and 64-bit versions.may also dictate which version is installed on a given system. I kind of suspected that there might be a cost issue and Acer wanted to keep the cost as low as possible to remain competitive in the marketplace. I didnt think about the fact that older software might not run on a 64-bit system and that this might be a reason to go with 32-bit. Im sure that the other reasons give above are valid as well. I guess in my case, I could try both versions of the OS and see if one performs better than the other. Since the computer has some programs for which there is no Linux equivalent, Ill probably just leave the Windows 7 OS on the HD and only use it when I need the Windows-only programs. Being an old computer.
